Open Question: What is the cheapest way to get from Chiang Mai to Phuket? and Bangkok to Chiang Mai??

I'll be travelling in thailand for 2 months this summer, so i'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, then from Chiang Mai to Phuket, then to Phuket to Bangkok. So far, a one way from Chiang Mai to Phuket on Thai Airways is $200 USD. Is there a cheaper way? are there busses? I don't mind long trips or anything.. it's better, actually. Thank you!!!!
