Open Question: Where should I go in Bangkok Thailand to find a good shopping market?

I am taking a trip to Bangkok, Thailand in August and planning to do a lot of shopping. I am not interested in the regular malls because I can find that in the United States. Can someone recommend me some markets around Bangkok with a variety of items? Also I just finished watching the travel channel they said Cha-Ta-Cha was the hugest market. Open Question: Anyone who toured Bangkok without joining tourist/travel guides?

I intend to travel Bangkok, Thailand this coming May/June 2007. We'll stay there for about 3-5 days only. I'll be with my cousins and a brother who's just 11 yrs. old. Obviously, i would want to know places there which are "family-friendly" to travel. Aside from that, we don't plan on visiting any beach because we're staying for a few days only. We''ll also travel without any tour guide touring us around. Is it fine to travel by ourselves?
